Proper Mulching Techniques

When creating a new landscape project mulch is commonly used to complete the look around trees and in beds.  Mulch is beneficial because when placed over soil it maintains moisture and improves soil conditions.  It is important to install mulch properly to obtain these benefits.

The recommended depth for installing mulch is 2-4 inches.  Using good quality hardwood mulch that looks nice but will decompose is best.

The benefits of proper mulching include:

Reduce soil moisture loss through evaporation, control weed growth, protects roots from extreme summer and winter temperatures, prevents certain plant disease, reduces risk of damage from weed whackers or lawn mowers, and gives a finished look to planting beds.

When mulch is installed improperly many problems can occur.  Too much mulch can lead to excess moisture on wet soil which leads to stress and root rot.  Mulch containing grass clippings or certain types of mulch effect PH soil levels and can lead to nutrient deficiencies.  Mulch piled against a tree trunk or plant stems can cause stress and could cause insect and/or disease problems.  Thick layers of mulch can become matted and may reduce the penetration of water and air.

Mulch, when installed properly, is an easy eye appealing addition to landscaping that provides many natural benefits.  At Squeals Landscaping we recommend mulch for all planting projects.
